BECKETT, YOUKILIS PACE RED SOX
DETROIT — Josh Beckett recorded eight strikeouts, including the 1,000th of his career, and Kevin Youkilis hit another home run at spacious Comerica Park to lead the Red Sox to a 5-1 victory over the Tigers on Thursday night.
Beckett (4-2) gave up six hits and a run in seven innings, and Youkilis hit his third home run in two games, giving him eight in Detroit. Justin Verlander (1-6) gave up five runs on nine hits in six innings. He struck out five, but allowed Jason Varitek’s two-run single and Jacoby Ellsbury’s sacrifice fly in the second inning, as well as Youkilis’ two-run drive in the fifth.

CHICAGO — Jermaine Dye homered for the third consecutive game and Juan Uribe added a go-ahead two-run drive in the fifth.

NEW YORK — Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano and Wilson Betemit homered and Mike Mussina (5-3) won his fourth straight start for career victory No. 255.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Daniel Cabrera (3-1) threw a three-hitter and Nick Markakis backed him with a three-run homer as Baltimore snapped a five-game losing streak.

SEATTLE — Richie Sexson was ejected after he charged the mound and flung his helmet at Rangers pitcher Kason Gabbard, who had thrown a pitch eye-high to him.
