SAN DIEGO—The Rockies-Padres game Friday night was delayed for 4 minutes in the third inning after a woman sitting in the field level behind first base was struck on the chin by a foul ball by Colorado’s Willy Taveras.

Both Taveras and plate umpire Ed Rapuano knew right away that the fan had been struck. Someone in the Padres’ dugout handed two towels into the crowd. A few minutes later the unidentified woman holding a towel against her face was helped out. The woman was seen by a doctor at the first aid office at Petco Park, then taken to a hospital for stitches, the Padres said.

When the game resumed, Taveras struck out.
