Reliever Ryan Speier joked that he had an extra muscle in his back. In fact, it was a bruised knot near his right shoulder from where Tadahito Iguchi’s line drive struck him in the seventh. Speier finished the inning, but the Rockies will monitor his condition during the next few days. “It felt fine until I iced it. It’s a little stiff,” Speier said.

Nobody likes hitting against San Diego’s Chris Young. Running? That’s a different story. Base-stealers had swiped 56 straight against the right-hander before rookie catcher Luke Carlin threw out Jonathan Herrera in the sixth inning.

They were (pop) flies in the ointment. Rockies first baseman Todd Helton lost consecutive popups in the second inning, one that went foul and another that Herrera caught.
