An apartment building in Boulder was evacuated over asbestos concerns after a fire raced through it early Monday.

Boulder firefighters were called about 2:30 a.m. to the fire at 1821 22nd St., said Sarah Huntley, a city spokeswoman.

The fire was quickly put out, and there were no injuries. But concerns arose over asbestos used in the construction of the three-story, 31-unit building, Huntley said.

Seven units were damaged, but the entire building remained evacuated Monday because of possible asbestos released into the air by the fire and the damage it caused.

It’s not clear how many residents were displaced because the complex was mostly occupied by University of Colorado students, most of whom have gone home for the summer.

The fire began in a juniper bush alongside the building. Investigators are trying to determine what sparked it.

At 1:30 p.m. Monday, firefighters wearing protective gear went inside the apartments to collect essential possessions, such as wallets, purses and medications, for displaced residents.

Residents won’t be allowed back into the building until today at the earliest, Huntley said.
