A habitual criminal could see a lengthy jail sentence for killing his mother-in-law’s Chihuahua.

A jury today convicted Joseph B. Trujillo, 44, of beating the dog to death with a shovel last November and tossing the body in a Dumpster. Trujillo denied the charges, saying he was set up by his in-laws, though witnesses said they saw him kill the animal.

He was found guilty of one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, a class 6 felony, which carries up to 18 months in jail. He will be sentenced, however, as a habitual offender on June 20, because of a record of theft and trespassing charges, including previous time in prison.
