PHOENIX — Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins is not in the lineup for the first time this season, a planned rest day as the team finishes its series tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Atkins has been the Rockies” best hitter. Manager Clint Hurdle has been looking for a day to spell him to help keep him fresh later in the season.
Jeff Baker will start in his place. As expected Ryan Spilborghs is leading off again and playing center field.
