AVONDALE, Colo.—A crew working on a road project severed a fiber-optic cable in Pueblo, knocking out phone service to parts of southeastern Colorado for about three hours.

Qwest Communications spokeswoman Jennifer Barton said residents in Avondale lost 911 and toll service at around 2:45 p.m. CenturyTel spokeswoman Kim Valiquette said some residents in La Junta, Lamar and surrounding areas lost phone service.

Neither company had an estimate of how many customers were affected. Phone service was restored at about 6:15 p.m.
