A man accused of beating to death the driver of another vehicle after an accident that killed his two stepchildren made his first court appearance Thursday, wearing a photo pin of the two dead teens, 9News reports.
Phillip Chavez of Loveland is accused of second-degree murder in the death of Glenn Ryburn.
9News reported that, according to the arrest affidavit, passing drivers and police tried to restrain Chavez after the accident on Interstate 25 in March but that Chavez punched Ryburn in the face at least 150 times. Ryburn died 10 weeks later.
Both drivers were legally intoxicated, the television station reported.
Police say that Chavez had pulled to the side of the highway to go to the bathroom. They do not believe his hazard lights were on when Ryburn’s car rear-ended his.
Chavez is out on bond and will be back in court in July.
