FORT COLLINS — Fort Collins firefighters have found the body of a homicide victim inside a house where two fires were burning.

Police identified the woman as Valerie A. Gendernalik, 26, of Fort Collins. She suffered a gunshot wound to the side of her face, and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the Larimer County Coroner.

Firefighters discovered her body and one of the fires in an upstairs bedroom after a neighbor called 911 on Friday morning. The second fire was found in the basement.

Police spokeswoman Rita Davis says one cat died in the fire while another cat and a small dog were unharmed. Denver Post staff and wire report
