Getting your player ready...

Ryan Spilborghs has gone from reserve outfielder to cleanup hitter, a promotion he called “bittersweet because we aren’t healthy, and it’s no fun when you aren’t winning.” Worse, Spilborghs is hurting. Ryan Dempster struck him with a third-inning pitch to his left wrist, leaving him in line for X-rays today after it became too tight and swollen to play. Said Spilborghs, who has broken his hamate bone before, “I think it’s just a deep bruise. That’s what I hope, anyway.”

Star-crossed Stewart.

Ian Stewart showed off remarkable range at his natural third base position, diving to his left and throwing Ryan Theriot out from his back in the second inning. Continuing his trend of blending brilliance with mistakes, Stewart struck out three times.

La Rosa, the better.

Jorge De La Rosa showed improvement in relief, demonstrating velocity that was absent as a starter. He could share an early left-handed bullpen role with Glendon Rusch, who’s likely to be skipped for his next start due to off days.
