A thief has run off with the running boards of an antique fire truck that’s being restored by West Metro firefighters.

The running boards of a 1956 Seagrave Pumper Fire Engine were swiped over the Memorial Day Weekend from an Arvada business where they were awaiting a new coat of paint, said Cindy Matthews, a spokeswoman with the West Metro Fire Protection District.

The district is restoring the engine to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of West Metro Firefighters Local 1309.

The stolen running boards will likely be sold as scrap, Matthews said, and will not fetch much money as such. But as a part of the ’56 Seagrave their worth is pegged at about $4,000, Matthews said.

“Their true value lies in their intended purpose, since each set of running boards was tailor-made to match that particular fire truck,” Matthews said.

The firefighters’ local is offering a reward for the return of the running boards, no questions asked, Matthews said.

The reward will be worth more than the $50 someone might get for scraping the pieces, Matthews said.

The boards can be dropped off at any West Metro fire station or the district’s administration building at 433 S. Allison Parkway, Lakewood.
