The student newspaper that last year ran an editorial saying “(Expletive) Bush” will now become part of a nonprofit group and will not be run by Colorado State University.
Student Media — which already includes the Rocky Mountain Collegian newspaper, College Avenue Magazine, radio station KCSU and television station CTV — will be the umbrella group under a recommendation approved by the CSU Board of Governors this week.
CSU will contract with Student Media to provide the following for an annual fee of $500,000:
• The purchase of television and audio broadcast services.
• The purchase of Collegian and College Avenue subscriptions.
• Educational opportunities for about 350 print and broadcast journalism students.
Student Media will be run by a governing board. CSU will designate two representatives to serve on the board, said Blanche Hughes, vice president of student affairs.
The university began considering shifting Student Media into a nonprofit in 2005, according to a CSU statement, which did not mention the Bush editorial.
However, CSU said a board of volunteers overseeing Student Media struggled with turnover.
“This reorganization follows a national trend toward large universities managing student newspapers and broadcast media through independent, nonprofit organizations,” Hughes said.
