ATLANTA — Braves right-hander John Smoltz will undergo season-ending surgery on his ailing right shoulder next week, but the 41-year-old is not ready to concede his next move is retirement.

“I’ve pulled off a lot of miracles,” Smoltz said Wednesday. “I probably shouldn’t have played this long. I’m looking forward to seeing if I can extend it.”

Footnotes.

Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla was away from the team for the birth of his child. He is expected to be back with the team today for the finale of a four-game series with the Braves.

• The Reds placed Ryan Freel (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled outfielder Corey Patterson from Triple-A Louisville (Ky.).

• Giants left-hander Noah Lowry had another MRI on his surgically repaired throwing forearm and won’t be pitching anytime soon — maybe not at all this season.

• Padres pitcher Jake Peavy threw 45 pitches off the mound in the bullpen and reported no pain in his strained right elbow. Also, right-hander Mark Prior underwent season-ending surgery on the anterior capsule in his right shoulder.

• The Yankees activated catcher Jorge Posada (shoulder) and optioned right-hander Dan Giese back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Pa.).

• Boston right-hander Curt Schilling (shoulder) threw 25 pitches off a bullpen mound, and his only complaint according to manager Terry Francona was that only 22 of the 25 pitches were strikes.

• Rays slugger Carlos Peña was placed on the DL because of a broken left index finger.

• Esteban Loaiza, a 21-game winner for the White Sox five years ago, returned to the team as a free agent. The Associated Press
