LONGMONT, Colo.—Longmont police say human error appears to be involved in the deaths of two men in a skydiving crash.

Witnesses say 28-year-old Matthew Seering and 54-year-old skydiving instructor Daniel Braafhart crashed during a tandem jump April 5 with Mile-Hi Skydiving Center after Braafhart made a sharp turn.

A police report obtained by the Camera shows rips and a four-foot tear were found in the parachute. Detective Eric Lewis says the rips probably were made after the crash. He says that even if the tear existed beforehand, it would not have affected how the parachute functioned.

Skydiving Center President Frank Casares told police the instructor made a turn too low to the ground. It wasn’t known why Braafhart turned.
