Getting your player ready...

The opera “Nixon in China” opens in Denver on Saturday, but watch out if you run into any Tricky Dicks on the 16th Street Mall.

To promote the opera, last week Opera Colorado’s Rex Fuller sent three guys in gray suits and Nixon masks onto the mall to hand out fortune cookies reading: “A singing ex-president is in your future” and “Chairman Mao invites you to the opera.”

Cute, huh?

Not if you’re with the FBI!

Leif Hojem, the head Nixon, returned to his office at Colorado Promotional Distributors and was informed by the building manager that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force had paid a visit and wanted to know just who these Nixons were and why they were distributing cookies that had “something to do with China.”

The heat left a card on the office door, and Hojem called to explain. He was sweating like Nixon at a debate.

If you want to go to “Nixon in China,” get tickets at 303- 357-ARTS or operacolorado . Just don’t wear a Nixon mask.

More steak!

A sign at the former Tula spot at 250 Josephine St. tells us Juicy Lucy’s Steakhouse is coming to town.

Its original outpost in Glenwood Springs is enormously popular for lunch and dinner — and Cece Zumwinkle (who owns the joint with her chef/husband David Zumwinkle) says: “We hope Cherry Creek embraces us.”

The place is named after their daughter, Lucy, a med student here in Denver.

They’ll serve Sterling Silver Premium Beef, lotsa fish and many wines under $30.

“We keep our prices as low as possible,” Cece says, meaning New York steaks under $30 with some powerful potatoes.

They hope to open early next month.

Arf!

Colorado Dog Magazine is on the stands with a woof- out cover shot of Peggy Shanahan, Sharon Magness, Janet Elway and Annabel Bowlen with their pups (Coby, Bailey, Delaney, Chewy, Champ, Dora, Gus and Molly). That’s a powerful — and beautiful — kennel.

Inside is a profile of Pat and Mark Miller and their pooch, Dudley. And look for Deuce, Fox 31’s helicopter dog, with pilot Rob Marshall. And Marge Husted is pictured hanging out in her ‘hood.

The biggest scoop in the issue: Ch. 2’s Ernie Bjorkman is finishing up his last year at veterinary technician school.

City spirit.
