VAIL — A decision limiting how many people can live in Vail’s largest affordable-housing complex could cut into housing stock for Vail Resorts workers.
The Timber Ridge Affordable Housing Corp. board decided last week that each apartment leased by businesses should only hold three people next winter.
Vail Resorts leased 159 of the 198 apartments at the town-owned complex last winter for its employees, with most of those apartments holding four people.
“Those units were primarily designed for three people,” Mayor Dick Cleveland said. “When you increase occupancy by 30 percent in those units, you increase wear and tear on the units, the load on the sewer system and water usage.”
Vail Resorts spokeswoman Kelly Ladyga declined to comment on the decision.
Vail Mountain provided employees with 648 beds in 2006-07, most of which was at Timber Ridge.
In the last few years, the town has struggled to provide housing that workers can afford as redevelopment creates more jobs and area home prices rise.
