DETROIT — Dominik Hasek is expected to announce his retirement, a person in the NHL told The Associated Press on Sunday night.
The Detroit Red Wings scheduled a news conference for this morning without revealing details.
A person within the league, who requested anonymity because the announcement was the goalie’s to make, said Hasek was expected to end his award-winning career.
Hasek won six Vezina Trophies as the NHL’s top goaltender and two Hart Trophies as the league’s MVP. He has won 389 regular-season games with the Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres and Chicago Blackhawks.
U.S., Argentina play to tie
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Goalkeeper Tim Howard and the United States appear ready for World Cup qualifying.
Howard had four spectacular point-blank saves on Julio Cruz, Landon Donovan made his 100th international appearance and the U.S. soccer team tied top-ranked Argentina 0-0 before 78,682 fans at Giants Stadium.
• Lukas Podolski scored both goals to give three-time champion Germany a good start at the European Championship with a 2-0 win over Poland in Klagenfurt, Austria.
In Vienna, Luka Modric scored from the penalty spot and Croatia held on for a 1-0 win over co-host Austria.
• Brian Ching scored twice and had an assist to help the Houston Dynamo beat Toronto FC 3-1 in Major League Soccer.
Walker sets U.S. mark
EUGENE, Ore. — Defending world champion Brad Walker broke an 8-year-old American pole vault record at the Prefontaine Classic, clearing 19 feet, 9 3/4 inches on the same field where he will try to make his first U.S. Olympic team in only three weeks.
Walker broke the record held by Jeff Hartwig at 19-9 1/4.
Miami earns CWS berth.
Yonder Alonso homered and Enrique Garcia pitched six effective innings as Miami defeated Arizona 4-2 to advance to its 23rd College World Series.
Also advancing to the CWS were North Carolina, which defeated Coastal Carolina 14-4; Florida State, which beat Wichita State 11-4; Georgia, which beat North Carolina State 17-8; and Rice, a 6-5 winner over Texas A&M.
Second-half run propels Suns
UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Asjha Jones scored 16 points, and the Connecticut Sun opened the second half with a 19-0 run en route to an 87-79 win over the Washington Mystics.
• Ticha Penicheiro scored nine of her 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Sacramento Monarchs defeated the New York Liberty 70-63.
• Rookie Charde Houston scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half to help the Minnesota Lynx defeat the San Antonio Silver Stars 90-78.
