Greeley Mayor Ed Clark announced Friday that Leprino Foods will build a cheese and whey production facility in east Greeley.

Leprino bought a former sugar-beet processing plant from Western Sugar Cooperative and has started the permit process to rehabilitate the old industrial site, Greeley City Manager Roy Otto said.

The first phase of construction will include demolishing the existing structure and replacing it with a 400,000- square-foot processing building. It will represent about $140 million in investment and include a minimum of 260 new jobs.

The site is expected to be operational by early 2012, and future expansion could lead to estimated total job growth of 500.

Leprino operates another facility in Fort Morgan.
