Jack and Isabel, both second-grade students at Denver’s Polaris at Ebert Elementary School, read their winning poems in a ceremony last month. Jack’s compelling poem is the opposite of romantic. Here it is:

Rats roaming down here.

Water flowing like music from the oboe.

Dangerous gases float in the air.

Down here underground.

RENDEZVOUS TO REBUILD

Civil War re-enactors, mountain men, fur trappers, artisans and traders will bivouac next weekend, luring urbanites into a free living-history lesson. Watch for living historian Case Hicks performing as Teddy Roosevelt, members of the Buffalo Soldiers of the American West, performances by historical bands and lots of loud artillery fire. Donations collected will be used to rebuild Trappers Fort in Fort Lupton.
