When United States Golf Association officials set up Torrey Pines for U.S. Open play, they envisioned the championship coming down to the 72nd hole. Sunday, the 18th was reachable in two shots. It didn’t work out that way for the final pairing, but both Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood had birdie putts to gain a playoff with Rocco Mediate. Although Westwood missed his, Woods didn’t and the ensuing tumult on the grounds clearly justified the USGA’s thinking.
