Those who missed out on Ride the Rockies but still want to take part in the fun might consider trading out their skinny slicks and heading to Crested Butte for Fat Tire Bike Week.
The festival celebrating Crested Butte’s considerable history in the world of mountain biking gets underway for the 28th year on Wednesday, just as the Ride the Rockies caravan rolls into town for a layover day. Daily guided rides will help cyclists discover the top local trails that put mountain biking on the map in Colorado, or at least the ones that aren’t still buried in snow.
Must see/do events include Friday afternoon’s chainless downhill race (and after-party), Saturday’s bike rodeo and the Bridges of the Butte 24-hour Townie Tour, which wraps up at 3 p.m. on Sunday. A film history of mountain biking is offered through the screening of the new movie, “Klunkerz,” on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights, and free live music throughout the festival is sure to keep the party bunny-hopping.
