Firefighters battled a spate of brush fires Monday, including a prairie fire of more than 2,500 acres in a remote portion of Weld County, and smaller blazes in El Paso and Douglas counties.

The Weld County fire, which began about 12:30 p.m. south of Dearfield, was extinguished by 6:30 p.m., according to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighters in El Paso County were able to quickly douse a 12-acre grass fire that came within yards of homes in the Peyton community.

During rush hour, smoke snarled C-470 in Lone Tree as several grass fires, consuming about 15 acres, produced plumes of smoke along the busy highway, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
