DENVER—Garrett Atkins, Troy Tulowitzki and Yorvit Torrealba homered to help the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 8-1 on Wednesday night.
Atkins drove in four runs and Ubaldo Jimenez pitched into the seventh inning for his second win in his last three starts.
Colorado scored seven runs in the first three innings against Randy Wolf (5-8), who lasted just four innings.
Atkins singled in a run in the first and followed Matt Holliday’s RBI single in the third with a three-run drive to left-center, his 11th of the year. Tulowitzki added a two-run homer in the third, his third of the year.
Torrealba connected in the eighth against Carlos Guevara to make it 8-1.
Jimenez (3-8) allowed five hits and one run in 6 1-3 innings.
Chase Headley homered and Wolf yielded four walks and six hits for the Padres, who have lost 15 of their last 18 games.
There was a scary moment in the top of the third when San Diego’s Michael Barrett fouled a pitch off his nose. Barrett remained on the ground near home plate for several minutes. He was attended to by trainers before walking to the clubhouse under his own power. He was taken to a hospital with what was believed to be a broken nose, according to the Padres.
Notes:@ The Rockies placed LHP Jeff Francis (shoulder inflammation) on the 15-day DL and recalled LHP Mark Redman from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Redman will take Francis’ turn in the rotation Thursday night against Florida. … Rockies OF Willy Taveras (sore left quadriceps) sat out Wednesday’s game. He is day to day.
