NEW YORK—United Airlines, a unit of UAL Corp., says it has reached a deal with the International Association of Machinists to offer early retirement packages to up to 400 customer service and ramp workers.
The Chicago-based company says employees who are at least 45 years old and have 15 or more years of service with the company as of Sept. 7 will be eligible. Severance payments will be based on years of service and retiree travel benefits.
“As we move forward with our previously announced capacity reductions, this agreement with the IAM will assist us in mitigating the impact of involuntary furloughs on our IAM employees,” says Senior Vice President Scott Dolan.
United says it will continue to consider alternatives to the furloughs.
