LONDON — The British government announced Thursday it would double the compensation it offers to seriously injured soldiers, after families complained that payments were too low. Britain has about 4,000 soldiers in Iraq and around 8,000 in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defense said the maximum lump-sum payment offered for the worst injuries would increase to $1.1 million, from $570,000.
