WASHINGTON — The Army’s effort to expand its Piñon Canyon training site hit a new obstacle Wednesday when Sen. Ken Salazar said he might oppose any land purchases, even those from willing sellers.
“I am not yet even to the point where I can say that I will support the addition of one more acre,” said Salazar, a Denver Democrat. “We need to go through some more significant analy sis.”
The comment came less than a week after the military indicated it plans to negotiate with landowners in the area.
Language put into a spending bill last year bans the Army from using any funding to move forward with the expansion.
But the Army said it could use money from another spending bill to pursue talks with property owners. Anne C. Mulkern, The Denver Post
