ADAMS COUNTY — Fire departments in southern Adams County snuffed out a 1,700-acre grass fire Sunday afternoon before it could threaten homes or motorists on 72nd Avenue and Rector-Leader Road.
No homes were in imminent danger, and no one was injured by the large blaze near Byers, said Candi Baker, spokeswoman for the Adams County Sheriff’s Department.
The fire was started by lightning about 1:45 p.m., she said.
In Washington County, a grass fire burned 800 acres in the Woodrow community.
That fire also was started by a series of dry lightning strikes that hit the plains east of Denver about 1:30 p.m., said Mike McCaleb, emergency manager for Washington County.
