A 19-year-old man was critically injured in a drive-by shooting early todayin a west Denver neighborhood between Invesco Field and Sloan’s Lake.

The teen was shot in the head by the unknown driver of a white Ford Mustang. The victim, who has not been identified, is on life-support systems at St. Anthony’s Central Hospital four blocks away from the shooting,

This evening, blood still stained the sidewalk outside the home where flowers marked the spot where the teenager fell. A vigil for his recovery was planned this evening.

Eddie Herrera, 16, held his friend’s head to stem the bleeding in the frantic minutes after one shot was fired by the unknown driver of the Mustang.

“I was holding him for about 10 minutes,” Herrera said.

Herrera said five young men in the Mustang followed a girl to the house from a nearby convenience store, which led to the drive-by shooting.

Police were called at 3:10 a.m. to the front yard near Julian Street and 19th Avenue.

“There were a group of kids at a party when this happened,” said Denver Police Detective Sharon Hahn. “The circumstances that led up to it are still being investigated.”

Herrera said the party had been to celebrate a friend’s 15th birthday.
