PITTSBURGH — Reliever Ryan Speier was a victim of the Rockies’ need for a roster spot for tonight’s starter, Valerio de Los Santos.
Speier has pitched well since his most recent call-up and has minor league options remaining, which make his demotion the most seamless move.
De Los Santos is likely only to get this one start before the return of the injured Jeff Francis, who is close to recovering from a shoulder problem.
The rockies have won nine of their past 10 games and are coming off their first road sweep since last September. A look at the lineup tonight against Pirates starter Ian Snell:
