A woman ordered out of a Colfax Avenue bar wandered into traffic and was hit by a car and killed this afternoon.

Police nor patrons of The Squire Lounge, where the woman had been before the accident, would identify the woman by name.

The woman’s body lay on the street under a blanket for more than an hour until the Denver Coroner’s office collected the body.

Sonny Jackson, a spokesman for the police department, said the woman, believed to be in her 30s or 40s, had been told to leave the bar at about 4:45 p.m.

She crossed to the north side of the street at mid-block, then when she started back across the Colfax she was struck in the west-bound lane.

The driver of the four-door sedan that hit her was cooperative, Jackson said. The district attorney’s office will determine if any charges are filed.

“That decision is the DA’s office, but the facts are clear that she was jaywalking in traffic,” he said.

Homeless people and bar patrons seemed to know the woman and talked among themselves about the disturbance in the bar. A group of men and women outside the bar grew belligerent when asked what happened.

A bar employee referred questions to the bar’s manager, who was not available and did not return a telephone call for comment.

Jackson said the woman did not appear to be homeless, but “we believe she frequents the area.”
