FORT COLLINS — After campus concern about an unsolved murder, Colorado State University police said Wednesday that they now think Matthew Quitmeyer probably died by his own hand.
Quitmeyer, 27, died from a gunshot wound to the chest in a dorm parking lot at CSU on Friday night. He lived in a nearby off-campus apartment. A day later, police found the rifle that Quitmeyer allegedly shot himself with tossed over a nearby fence into some thick bushes, campus Police Chief Dexter Yarbrough said. Quitmeyer bought the gun in October, records show.
Police have since learned that Quitmeyer was suicidal over constant migraines and that on Friday, he was suffering an especially severe bout.
“We’re not yet saying this could be nothing but a suicide,” Yarbrough said. “We’re saying the factors we have lead us to believe it was a suicide. There are still avenues of investigation we’re pursuing.” He said forensic test results would eventually determine whether Quitmeyer pulled the trigger.
Quitmeyer’s funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Collins. Joey Bunch, The Denver Post
