A Longmont woman was beaten and strangled by her common-law husband who also killed the victim’s kitten as a way to control her, police said.

The woman was strangled to the point of losing consciousness, said Det. Stephen Desmond of the Longmont Police Department. The Denver Post is not identifying the 46-year-old woman because she’s an alleged victim of domestic violence.

After regaining consciousness, the woman fled her attacker and safely made it to a fire station where an ambulance rushed her to a local hospital.

The prolonged attacked happened from about 8 p.m. Monday until about 6 a.m. Tuesday, Desmond said.

On Tuesday night police arrested Jorge Orozco-Silva, 25, on suspicion of attempted murder, kidnapping and aggravated cruelty to animals among other possible charges, police said. Orozco-Silva, a transient and self-employed painter, is being held at the Weld County Jail.

The couple had been living in an old RV on vacant property just outside Longmont, Desmond said.

The woman’s multiple injuries included fractured ribs.

“She had injuries on her body from head to toe,” Desmond said.
