Vince Chowdhury said today that he is not actively campaigning for House District 22 but has not made a decision about his status on the Jefferson County school board.
Meanwhile, three Jefferson County women have created a website, , and are forming a committee to explore recalling Chowdhury from the school board. His term expires in November 2009.
“I am not aware of anything” about a recall, Chowdhury said. “Everybody has their opinion and their right, and I respect that.”
The school board voted to ask Chowdhury to resign on July 9, the day he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault. He was given a suspended sentence for a June 17 incident in which he slapped his 16-year-old daughter for behaving in a way he thought was disrespectful. She also told police that he choked her.
Chowdhury was given until July 25 to let the board know his plans, but the deadline passed without word from him.
Today, he said he is focusing on his family first. “Everything else is secondary,” he said, noting that the board’s next meeting isn’t until Aug. 21.
Deb Dempsey and two other women have taken out papers for a possible recall, which would require 42,752 verified signatures within 60 days after the petition language is finalized.
“All of us, as women, feel disgusted with him continuing to stay on the board,” Dempsey said.
