Two art cows that normally pasture on the 16th Street Mall have been pulled from their respective posts near the Denver Pavilions and Skyline Park and sent out for a little pre-Democratic National Convention primping.

“They’ve been standing out there in the elements for two years, so they’re getting cleaned up,” said Sarah Neumann, spokeswoman for the Downtown Denver Partnership. “One is getting a new design, but only because we couldn’t find the original artist who did it.”

Tempe, Ariz., artist Sean Griffin came to town to repaint “Denver, Moo Mean the World to Us,” the design he created for the Denver Cow Parade in 2006.

The cow previously known as “Majesty,” which wore a hide of mountains and moons, was shipped to Colorado Springs, where Douglas Rouse reimagined the Western theme with images of a cowboy and cowgirl answering Denver trivia questions.

Rouse decorated two cows for the original parade, “Cow Stamp(ede)” and “14,000 ft Cow.”

The cows, owned by the Downtown Denver Business Improvement District, will be back on display about a week before the convention begins Aug. 25.
