Seahawks wide receiver Bobby Engram will miss six to eight weeks with a cracked bone in his right shoulder suffered on the first play of Friday’s preseason game against Minnesota.

“It was a freak deal,” coach Mike Holmgren said Monday, adding Engram remained in the game.

Holmgren said the worst case for Engram would be missing three regular-season games and returning to face the Giants on Oct. 5.

Engram, 35, set a franchise record last season with 94 catches then skipped Seattle’s offseason minicamps while in a dispute about a contract that expires after this season. The Seahawks are refusing to negotiate a deal beyond the one paying him $1.7 million this season.

The offense was also missing quarterback Matt Hasselbeck for the second consecutive day. He has a stiff back that tightened while he played two series against the Vikings.

Meanwhile, Seattle terminated the contract of 2004 first-round draft choice Marcus Tubbs, a former starting defensive tackle who had surgery a year ago on his right knee.

Raiders sign Archuleta

The Raiders signed Adam Archuleta and released safety Greg Wesley.

Archuleta has been a safety in the NFL but played linebacker in college at Arizona State. He could contend for a spot as a backup safety or for the starting strong side linebacker job in Oakland. Archuleta was cut in May by Chicago after one disappointing season with the Bears.

Footnotes.

Panthers receiver Steve Smith is day to day after suffering a concussion during Saturday’s 23-20 overtime victory against the Colts.

• Quarterback Byron Leftwich, signed by the Steelers on Sunday, was impressive during his first two practices with the team, so much that coach Mike Tomlin said “it looks like he’ll be able to play” Thursday when the team plays the Bills.

• Jaguars receiver Matt Jones pleaded not guilty to possession of cocaine in Fayetteville, Ark., a charge that carries up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. He faces an Oct. 10 trial date — two days before the Jaguars play at Denver.

• In his first practice with the Dolphins, quarterback Chad Pennington completed 13-of-21 passes, connecting with tight end David Martin for a touchdown pass on a fade route but also getting intercepted in a red zone drill by cornerback Andre Goodman.

• Redskins defensive lineman Erasmus James (knee) passed his physical and was activated from the physically unable to perform list. He didn’t take part in the 11-on-11 session and probably won’t be ready to play Saturday against the Jets.

• Jets tight end A.J. Schable, who lost feeling on the left side of his body when he and Cleveland offensive lineman Cliff Louis slammed into each other on a kickoff return during New York’s 24-20 preseason victory, participated in his first full practice since the incident Thursday night.

• Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia returned to practice after being sidelined 10 days by a right calf strain.

• Bills offensive tackle Matt Murphy was driven to a hospital after hurting his left shoulder during practice. Coach Dick Jauron said the Murphy was having tests.
