GREELEY, Colo.—Prosecutors filed a felony child abuse charge against the father of an 11-month-old baby police say died when he was electrocuted after grabbing a clock with exposed wires.

The Weld County District Attorney’s office said Tuesday 23-year-old Ernesto Talavera-Nunez will be charged with one count of child abuse negligently causing death. The felony is punishable by up to 16 years in prison, probation or a community corrections sentence.

Prosecutors say the baby had injuries consistent with electrical burns and a coroner’s report showed he died from cardiac arrest.

Prosecutors accuse Talavera-Nunez of leaving an alarm clock with exposed wires within reach of his son. Police say Talavera-Nunez was working on the clock at home.
