DENVER—The Denver Fire Department says an apartment fire sent three people to the hospital and had others jumping from lower-level balconies to escape the flames.

Denver Fire spokesman Phil Champagne says 150 people were displaced by the blaze that may have started when an oxygen tank exploded Wednesday afternoon.

Champagne says firefighters used ladders to rescue people from their balconies on the fifth and sixth floors of the apartment in a southeast Denver neighborhood. Champagne says the fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes but not before leaving 56 of the 72 apartment units uninhabitable.
