A 39-year-old Lafayette man was killed late last night when he tried backing up on a steep four-wheel drive road and rolled his pickup.
The man, whose identity was not released pending notification of family members, was thrown from his 1997 Ford F-150 pickup as it rolled 190 feet on Lazy “Z” Road and Magnolia at 10:26 p.m., said Trooper Gilbert Mares, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.
The area is near Gross Reservoir in Boulder County.
Karla K. Terrel, 46, of Lafayette was also thrown from the pickup and was seriously injured. She was taken by helicopter to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver, Mares said.
Neither the male driver nor Terrel was wearing seat belts. The driver was going north on the dirt road at a 26-degree incline when he could no longer go forward and tried backing up, Mares said.
He lost control of the pickup, which began rolling on the passenger side, he said. The pickup stopped upright on its wheels. The two occupants were found near the truck, Mares said.
Authorities believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the accident, he said.
