GREENVILLE, S.C. — Tyler Hamilton of Boulder edged Blake Caldwell by two-thousandths of a second Sunday to win the USA Cycling Professional Road Race championship.
Hamilton and Caldwell finished in 4 hours, 38 minutes, 19 seconds. From the chase group of three riders, Caldwell teammate Danny Pate took third place, four seconds back.
Poulter, Casey selected to Ryder Cup team
GLENEAGLES, Scotland — Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo used his two picks on Ian Poulter and Paul Casey, a surprising decision that left Darren Clarke off the European team for the first time since 1995.
Clarke figured to be a likely choice because he played on the last five teams and has won twice on the European Tour in the past four months. Instead, Faldo went with two Englishmen at the end of the Johnnie Walker Championship.
Gregory Havret shot a 3-under- par 70 for a one-stroke victory over Graeme Storm (68 —279), and Oliver Wilson finished 10th to clinch Europe’s 10th and final automatic Ryder Cup spot. Justin Rose and Soren Hansen also qualified.
Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Henrik Stenson, Robert Karlsson, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Graeme McDowell had already made the team.
• Mike Weir holed a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for a 4-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Camilo Villegas (63) in the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Mass.
Three shots behind were Sergio Garcia (68) and Vijay Singh (69).
• Jeff Sluman won the First Tee Open for his second Champions Tour victory, closing with a 5-under 67 at Pebble Beach (Calif.) for a 202 total and five-stroke victory over Fuzzy Zoeller (69) and Craig Stadler (71).
Rookie Wilson wins Detroit Indy Grand Prix
DETROIT — Rookie Justin Wilson raced to his first IndyCar Series victory, edging Helio Castroneves in the Detroit Indy Grand Prix.
Castroneves led for the majority of the road race on the Belle Isle course but was penalized for blocking Wilson and was forced by rule to relinquish the lead with fewer than 20 laps to go.
• Cruz Pedregon won the U.S. Smokeless Showdown for the first time at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Clermont, Ind., beating Tim Wilkerson to earn $100,000 in the annual bonus race for funny cars.
Larry Dixon (top fuel), Allen Johnson (pro stock) and Matt Smith (pro stock motorcycle) also topped their divisions.

In Sunday’s other WNBA game, former Horizon High School standout Jamie Carey hit a jumper with two minutes left and two free throws in the closing seconds to lift the Connecticut Sun to an 80-76 victory over the Seattle Storm.
