A 971 acre fire near Meeker poses little threat and firefighters have decided to let portions of it burn, said Mike Cook, a dispatcher with the Rio Blanco sheriff’s office.

“It is not going to be too much of an issue because it is starting to rain today,” he said.

Seven fire trucks remain at the scene. The blaze 7 miles northwest of Meeker is among several started by lightning in northwest Colorado in the past week.

On the west side, the fire is being allowed to burn as it moves from East Jordan Gulch toward West Jordan Gulch. The fire will improve wildlife habitat improvement, and reduce hazardous fuel.
