AURORA, Colo.—Members of the Colorado Army National Guard have departed the state en route to the Gulf Coast to help in recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav.
The guard said in a statement that about 30 personnel from the 2nd Battalion of the 135th Aviation unit left Buckley Air Force Base in the east Denver suburb of Aurora early Tuesday.
The members flew in Chinook helicopters, instead of Black Hawks, to assist with the delivery of food and water.
Col. Joel Best says not as many resources are needed because a successful mass evacuation eliminated the need for Black Hawk helicopters to be used for search and rescue operations.
