Somewhere a thief is hustling to sell a bass guitar that has been Samantha Donen’s companion for 16 years.
Donen, who performs solo as Samantha Doom in her comedy/variety show or with two others in a comedy/rock show as Samantha Doom Blows Up the Band, was unloading her equipment after a gig Saturday when she placed the Peavey Fury in the open garage of her home in the Montclair neighborhood.
“The police said it was a crime of opportunity. They walked off with it, and likely they are going to sell it. It has way more sentimental value than monetary value,” she said. Donen called it “my baby.”
Donen, 33, who learned to play on the 1990 Peavey, is recommending that musicians keep the serial numbers of their instruments someplace safe in case they are stolen. She didn’t, and it may be harder to locate the guitar without the number, she said.
The four-string bass has a single pickup and dice for tuning knobs. The finish is lavender with red peeking through.
The back has an anarchy sign scratched into the paint, she said, and the front has various stickers, including one that says 5150.
She posted a plea on Craigslist, and anyone who sees her guitar or knows anything about it can contact her at findmybass@gmail.com.
She said: “My heart is broken until I find my bass.”
