Danelle Hauther hopes that giving away 500 flowers today will help her Aurora floral business bloom.

Hauther, owner of The Fresh Flower Market on South Buckley Road, is participating in the FTD Good Neighbor Day program.

She’s giving a dozen flowers — white and lavender roses, and white and yellow daisies and mums — to neighbors and customers who patronize her shop today.

The catch: Whoever she gives the free flowers to has to pass on 11 to other people and keep only one.

“We get to pass that satisfaction on to other people, the joy of getting flowers,” Hauther said. “It’s very rewarding.”

Debbie Ford, a hair stylist at the Great Clips next to the flower shop, got the first group of flowers this morning.

“I have clients. If they are ladies, and they come in today, I will just give to them,” Ford said. “It will make them feel good.”

Ford said she plans to keep an extra one to give to her mother-in-law.

Hauther said she doesn’t anticipate any problem giving away 500 flowers during the course of her day. The shop is open until 6 p.m.

If all goes well, she may turn the national annual event into a monthly or quarterly practice at her shop.

“I love it,” Hauther said. “We get to see their reactions when they get flowers.”
