FRISCO, Texas—Mike Petke scored in the 60th minute for his first goal in nearly one year to lead the Colorado Rapids past FC Dallas, 1-0, on Thursday night.
Terry Cooke lofted the ball on a corner kick in front of the net to a wide open Petke, whose last goal came last Sept. 8. Petke took the pass and scored on a header into the right corner to help the Rapids snap a 13-game winless streak at FC Dallas dating to May 5, 2001.
The goal also snapped a 283-minute scoring drought for the Rapids, who last scored three games ago against Kansas City on Aug. 16.
Colorado (8-12-3, 27 points) moved into a tie with Chivas USA, who plays Friday at Toronto, for third in the Western Conference.
FC Dallas (6-9-8, 26 points) dropped to 0-3-1 in its last four and remains one point out of the last playoff spot.
Kenny Cooper, who is second in the MLS with 13 goals, had a scoring chance from 20 yards out in the 50th minute. Colorado goalkeeper Preston Burpo, who made seven saves, dove to his right to stop Cooper’s shot.
FC Dallas’ best opportunity came in the 35th minute. Jeff Cunningham faked out Burpo and hit the corner of the crossbar on an open net.
Rapids interim coach Gary Smith won the first time since replacing Fernando Clavijo on Aug. 20.
