LOS ANGELES — California’s six most senior Episcopal bishops Wednesday declared their opposition to a proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would ban same-sex marriage.

The bishops said preserving the right of gays and lesbians to marry would enhance the “Christian values” of monogamy, love and commitment.

The conflict over Proposition 8 is unfolding amid a wrenching dispute over homosexuality in the Anglican Communion, which has 77 million members worldwide.

Conservative bishops in Africa, Asia and elsewhere have balked at efforts at change by more liberal leaders, primarily from North America.
