DENVER—Two vacancies on the U.S. District Court in Denver are closer to being filled.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote Sept. 18 on the nominations of Phillip Brimmer and Christine Arguello. They had Senate hearings this week.

If the committee confirms them, the full Senate would still have to vote, so it’s unclear when they would become judges.

If the openings aren’t filled before President Bush leaves office in January, the process would start all over again.

Arguello and Brimmer’s nominations had been mired in a dispute between Colorado’s senators, Republican Wayne Allard and Democrat Ken Salazar. They set aside the disagreement on Monday.

No hearing has been scheduled for a third candidate, Denver attorney Gregory Goldberg.
