ASPEN, Colo.—Aspen Valley Hospital treasurer John Jellinek resigned Thursday following newspaper reports of personal financial problems.
“This was a difficult decision for John. He played a central role in the very successful turnaround the hospital experienced a few years ago, and he continues to want the best for AVH,” hospital chairman John Sarpa said. “He stated that he hopes this action ‘will help the Board refocus on the tasks at hand.'”
The Aspen Daily News reported this week on 17 lawsuits it uncovered accusing Jellinek, 63, of financial improprieties including conversion, fraud, theft, unjust enrichment, negligence and repeated breaches of contracts, loan guarantees, leases and fiduciary duties. Some stemmed from past business deals.
In four cases, judges ruled against Jellinek for sums of six and seven figures, the Aspen Daily News reported. Jellinek said the sums would be paid.
“Everybody in business has problems and I’ve had my share of them, but it has no effect on Aspen Valley Hospital,” Jellinek had told the newspaper.
