FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Colorado State University President Larry Penley has set a goal for the school to be carbon neutral by 2020.

Penley said in his annual fall address Thursday that CSU would reduce its greenhouse gas emissions through conservation, with the savings being use to help fund the adoption of renewable energy technologies.

He says the school does not plan to rely on purchasing carbon credits to reach its goal, a practice he called a gimmick.

Colorado State is trying to position itself as the “Green University,” where students, faculty and staff demonstrate environmental stewardship, develop programs to train a “green” work force, and solve global environmental problems.
