DENVER—Former University of Colorado football coach Bill McCartney has returned to lead Promise Keepers, the conservative Christian men’s group he co-founded.

McCartney was named CEO and chairman of the board over the weekend, five years after he left the group because of his wife’s health.

Promise Keepers general counsel Ed O’Brien says Lyndi McCartney is still ill but agrees with McCartney’s decision to return.

O’Brien says former CEO and president Tom Fortson resigned voluntarily over the weekend and that board chairman Sam Winder recommended McCartney replace him.

Winder also resigned over the weekend. Raleigh Washington, named by McCartney to be the group’s new president, says Winder felt his “season at Promise Keepers had been completed.”
