South-metro drivers can go a little bit faster today: The speed limit on Interstate 225 between Interstate 25 and Parker Road went from 55 mph to 65 mph.
The higher speed limit makes that stretch of road safer, the Colorado Department of Transportation said in a news release.
“This portion of I-225 was improved through the T-REX project, making it necessary to increase the speed limit to improve safety,” CDOT Traffic Engineer Steve Hersey said in a statement. “The existing speed limit was appropriate for travel on a roadway with lower design standards than the reconstructed highway we see today.”
The agency studied traffic on the post-T-REX interstate, looking at things such as accidents and traffic speeds. The standard for setting a speed limit is that 85 percent of traffic moves at or below the posted speed, the release said. CDOT found that 85 percent of the traffic in that stretch of road was already traveling at 70 mph.
